Numerical simulation of density-driven flow and heat transport processes in porous media using the network method

    Get PDF
Density-driven flow and heat transport processes in 2-D porous media scenarios are governed by coupled, non-linear, partial differential equations that normally have to be solved numerically. In the present work, a model based on the network method simulation is designed and applied to simulate these processes, providing steady state patterns that demonstrate its computational power and reliability. The design is relatively simple and needs very few rules. Two applications in which heat is transported by natural convection in confined and saturated media are studied: slender boxes heated from below (a kind of Bénard problem) and partially heated horizontal plates in rectangular domains (the Elder problem). The streamfunction and temperature patterns show that the results are coherent with those of other authors: steady state patterns and heat transfer depend both on the Rayleigh number and on the characteristic Darcy velocity derived from the values of the hydrological, thermal and geometrical parameters of the problems. The first author acknowledges the support of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena through a pre-doctoral scholarship and the economic support of the Universidad Católica del Norte to cover the costs to publish in open access

The Focus-Center-Limit Cycle Bifurcation in Symmetric 3D Piecewise Linear Systems

    Get PDF
The birth of limit cycles in 3D (three-dimensional) piecewise linear systems for the relevant case of symmetrical oscillators is considered. A technique already used by the authors in planar systems is extended to cope with 3D systems, where a greater complexity is involved. Under some given nondegeneracy conditions, the corresponding theorem characterizing the bifurcation is stated. In terms of the deviation from the critical value of the bifurcation parameter, expressions in the form of power series for the period, amplitude, and the characteristic multipliers of the bifurcating limit cycle are also obtained. The results are applied to accurately predict the birth of symmetrical periodic oscillations in a 3D electronic circuit genealogically related to the classical Van der Pol oscillator.

Material and method: A description of the study sample was made analyzing the Foot Posture Index and Body Mass Index to 31 subjects of 8 years. The sports activity and the frequency with which it is performed have also been analyzed in addition to assessing whether they had orthopedic treatment. Results: 50% of the sample have pronated feet. The Body Mass Index is higher in the male sex, 30% of the sample are overweight and 12% is obese. Conclusion: It can’t be concluded that patients with a high Body Mass Index predispose to having one type of foot or another. The sports activity and the frequency with which it is performed decrease the BMI of the subjects, being this an effective prevention strategy against childhood obesity

Encoded Spanish Music Heritage through Verovio: The Online Platforms Fondo de Música Tradicional IMF–CSIC and Books of Hispanic Polyphony IMF–CSIC

This paper presents the recent implementation of encoded music notation in two open access platforms of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) devoted to traditional music and polyphony, respectively: Fondo de Música Tradicional IMF-CSIC (FMT)1 and Books of Hispanic Polyphony IMF-CSIC (BHP)2. Even though, at first, both repertories seem unconnected, they have many textual/literary and musical points in common – such as the presence/survival of old 15th–17th century texts and/or melodies of polyphonic romances (ballads) in the 20th century oral tradition –; future technological developments will facilitate further connections beyond the ones already found through search by text incipits and numeric melodic incipit connecting both platforms. The presentation will have two parts devoted to FMT (with more than 20.000 images of melodies in open access, it is the largest online archive of folklore in the Hispanic world; it is used also for OMR research) and BHP (a reference online catalogue for polyphonic choir books in Spain and books with Hispanic polyphony elsewhere). After a brief explanation about the origin and scope of the repertories covered in each platform, a few examples of encoded transcriptions of a melody, of an incipit in mensural notation, and of a polyphonic work (in MusicXML, **mens, and **kern; MEI can be used, too) rendered through Verovio will illustrate the potential development of FMT and BHP. Both websites constitute leading educational and musicological resources of the very rich Spanish music heritage, inviting national and international collaboration (crowdsourcing) to expand the contents of both platforms and to develop their digital technology
